On March 29, the Board of Commissioners of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) approved the accreditation of two Spalding University School of Business programs—the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and the Bachelor of Science in Accounting. The decision was announced March 31 at the IACBE Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Accreditation from an external organization like IACBE provides our students with external validation that they are receiving a high quality education that has prepared them for the world of business,” says Provost L. Randy Strickland. “IACBE accreditation also provides the regional business community additional confidence in the quality of Spalding business graduates.”
IACBE promotes excellence in teaching and learning in business education. Since 1997, the IABCE has accredited more than 200 business programs worldwide offering associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
“Achieving IACBE accreditation confirms how Spalding’s School of Business focuses, each day, on providing student-oriented quality programs in accounting and business,” says Dr. Michelle Reiss, Chair of the School of Business.
Spalding University’s School of Business offers degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s levels. The university founded the School of Business in 1979.
“The faculty of the School of Business are so proud to be associated with and accredited by IACBE – an organization that first and foremost focuses on excellence in business education and the outcomes of that education,” says Reiss.
President Tori Murden McClure and Spalding’s Board of Trustees have approved the establishment of over 1.5 million dollars in scholarships to support individuals who want to enter the teaching profession or further their education by enrolling in one of the College of Education’s master’s degree programs.
An Information session will be held at 5 p.m. on April 25th at the Spalding University Egan Leadership Center located on the corner of Fourth and Breckinridge Streets.
To be eligible for scholarship dollars that would reduce the cost of tuition from $640 to $350 per credit hour, individuals must enroll in the one of the eight programs offered by the College of Education by the summer 2011. Spalding offers the following graduate degrees in the College of Education: Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Master of Education (MEd) in the Teacher Leader Program, Master of Arts (MA) in School Guidance Counseling, and a Rank I in the School Principal Program.
Applicants admitted to one of these programs will receive scholarship money for the two years necessary to complete the program amounting to approximately $10,000. Spalding’s College of Education supports the Louisville workforce, and the decision to launch this scholarship program is aimed to support the community’s commitment to the 55,000 degrees initiative. (www.55000degrees.com).
The Master of Arts in Teaching degree is designed for persons who have completed an undergraduate degree in an area other than education. Certification is offered in the following areas: Elementary (P-5) [only the traditional route is available in Elementary], Middle School (5-9), Secondary (8-12), Learning and Behavioral Disorders (LBD) (P-12), Spanish (P-12), Art (P-12) and Business and Marketing Education (5-12).
Two routes are available for students who enter the Master of Arts in Teaching programs: Traditional and Alternative. The traditional route allows students to focus on completing their course work generally while holding a job. The alternative route allows students to be employed teaching in public, private or parochial schools while completing their degree.
“Our newly redesigned master’s degree programs build upon extensive experiential practice and meet all the newest standards established by the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” says McClure.

WHAT: Spalding University hosts its 39th Annual Running of the Rodents themed, “Peace, Love, & Rats.” Currently nine rodents named after singers and songwriters of the ’60s including Carlos Ratana, Marley, and Joplin will compete for the coveted garland of fruit-flavored cereal-o’s as they speed around a miniature racetrack—.024 furlongs in length and created by Spalding alumna and former Rat Queen Madonna Wilson. The rodents are trained by teams of Spalding students, staff, and faculty.
Local news personalities Barry Bernson of Fox 41 and Dawn Gee of WAVE 3 will emcee the races. Steve Buttleman – official bugler of Churchill Downs will announce each race with the traditional call to the post.
A public parade complete with floats and decorated vehicles will precede the Running of the Rodents. Parade participants will be dressed in tie dye t-shirts and other 1960s attire to mimic a peace protest. Lunch (cash-only) will be provided following race day festivities in the University Center Ballroom, 824 South Fourth Street.
Special events taking place earlier during “Rat Week” include a penny war, a t-shirt tie dye party, a cereal eating competition, and a hippie nonsense day that includes tug-of-war, water balloon tag, and a pie fight.
WHO: Rodents named for 1960s singers and songwriters and trained by teams from the Spalding community.
WHEN: April 14, 2010
Rat Parade at 11:30 a.m.; Rat Races to follow.
WHERE: Rat Parade- Route along 3rd &4th Streets in downtown Louisville, KY

WHY: When Spalding University’s former professor Sister Julia Clare Fontaine overheard a senior complain about the “rat race” of finals week, she immediately had an idea for a stress reliever before spring session final exams. Since 1973, the Running of the Rodents has been a fun-filled Louisville tradition. Coined as “The Most Exciting Two Seconds in Sports” by Trivial Pursuit® after 1987′s Deep Throat won the Rodent Derby in 1.8 seconds, Spalding University’s annual rat race serves as both a stress reducer and a unique method of teaching students about animal care as well as behavior modification techniques.
