MFA Summer Residency

The World Is Our Classroom

At Spalding, we believe that the best writing springs not just from talent and drive but from a rich accumulation of life experiences. Spalding’s innovative summer semester allows students to study abroad and explore a different international locale each summer, extending their understanding of the customs, people, and literature of diverse cultures the world over.

The 2014 summer residency takes place in Prague and Berlin. Information on travel, accommodations, and cost will be posted by October 1.. The deadline for admissions applications for the summer semester is February 1, 2014.

Like our spring and fall semesters, our summer semester begins with an intensive on-site residency and continues when students return home to study one-on-one with a faculty mentor over the course of a semester. Unlike the other semesters, the summer semester begins abroad and continues with an independent study session that is an extended 9-month schedule, allowing students to spread the same amount of work over a longer period of time. Summer-semester students dedicate about 15 hours a week to their writing, rather than the 25 hours required in the spring and fall semesters.

Our plans for future summer residencies will be announced soon . Destinations are subject to change should unforeseen circumstances arise. Previous locations were Paris (2007 and 2012), London/Bath (2008), Barcelona (2009), Buenos Aires (2010), Rome/Tuscany (2011), and Galway and Dublin (2013).

The 2014 Summer Residency in Prague/Berlin (July 11-23)

In July 2014, the Spalding MFA in Writing Program travels to Prague, then Berlin.

Enrollment and Deadline

Students may sign up for the 2014 residency between November 2013 and  before February 1, 2014 (for current students) or March 30, 2014 (for incoming students). The earlier a student signs up with EF College Study Tours, the lower the monthly payment.
