MS in Business Communication

The Master of Science in Business Communication (MSBC) program is the first interdisciplinary degree of its kind in the state of Kentucky. Spalding University began offering courses in the MSBC program in 2004 in response to the growing need for improved competence in leadership, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. In national surveys, professionals reported varying levels of competence in strategic thinking, problem solving and implementation, but acknowledged their weaknesses in leadership and human relations skills.

The MSBC program is designed for working professionals with a variety of academic backgrounds and career objectives. From its inception, the MSBC program has provided high quality education for leaders and aspiring leaders through partnerships with businesses by establishing employee cohorts or in the non-cohort program comprised of students from various organizations. MSBC graduates consistently report that the MSBC degree significantly enhances their employability and in preparing them for senior leadership positions in many disciplines including healthcare, banking, marketing and communication, retail, government and higher education.  There is significant evidence that several alumni of the MSBC program attained senior positions in their organizations resulting from the skills and competencies they acquired in the MSBC program.

MSBC MISSION

In keeping with the mission of Spalding University to deliver high quality education that is relevant to the current and future needs of the communities we serve, (MSBC) is committed to constantly reviewing and developing its curriculum through a rigorous research process that engages students, employers, community partners and the faculty and staff of Spalding University. Our intent is to equip our graduates with relevant advanced business and communication competencies that will allow them to perform at the highest levels in their organizations.

MSBC CURRICULUM

Enshrined in our curriculum are competencies that emphasize critical thought and ethical reasoning. Also Included in our courses of study are diversity competencies that guarantee that every graduate of the MSBC program knows how to effectively engage and communicate with people regardless of demographic differences including gender, age, nationality, ethnicity or socio economic status.

The MSBC curriculum is comprised of seven required courses (21 credit hours) and four elective courses (12 credit hours) for a total of 33 credit hours. Students entering the program may pursue one of four concentration options:

*Students may pursue the Open Electives Program where they choose four elective courses that they are interested in pursuing. Each of the other three concentrations is comprised of specialized courses that are unique to the concentration.

MSBC MEETING TIMES

MSBC courses are offered in the six-week accelerated format. Classes are offered one night per week or on Saturday mornings for four hours. Every seventh week is a “break-week” when students are not expected to attend classes. The MSBC degree schedule is designed for working professionals who may complete the degree in as little as 18 months. Students who plan to be fully engaged in graduate study as a primary goal may complete the degree in twelve months by doubling their course loads each session. However, students may only pursue the Open Elective Program based on a 12-month schedule.  All other concentrations require 18 months of study. Given the intensity of the program of study, students who are contemplating this approach are advised to consult with the MSBC Interim Director before enrolling in two courses per session.
