2012-2013 Endowed Scholarship Application

It’s now time to apply for Spalding University’s Endowed Scholarship Program (ESP). The ESP offers institutional scholarship opportunities for all Spalding students, all programs. The application timeframe for the 2012-2013 academic year is January 30 thru March 9, 2012. Applicant must be currently enrolled or officially accepted to the University and file their 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA www.fafsa.ed.gov) (if applicable) by application deadline March 9, 2012.

Our newly designed application consists of a few yes/no questions as well as an essay question on the following topic: “Describe your personal journey toward earning a college degree, and how it impacts your future.” Though the application is shorter than previous years the program’s opportunities remain unchanged. We’re proud of the great legacy and rich tradition the ESP brings to our students as they further their studies at Spalding University.

Spalding, One of Four Local Colleges Partnering to Serve the Adult Learner Population

On January 16, Spalding University was announced as one of four local colleges to partner with Kentucky’s Council on Postsecondary Education for the Feb. 1 launch of the Signature Partnership Education Access Center. The Center, located in Parrish Hall, Simmons College of Kentucky (1015 S. Eighth St), aims to help adult learners successfully earn a college degree, offering assistance and guidance in navigating components of higher education such as diagnostic testing, advising, financial aid and college preparation.

“In support of the 55,000 Degrees initiative and as neighbors in the ‘education corridor’ Spalding is poised to assist Simmons College in any way we can,” says President Tori McClure about the university’s readiness to help the Center succeed.

Simmons College’s central location for the Center provides accessibility for West Louisville residents as well as other underserved populations. According to a UofL spokesperson, Simmons College is already a part of UofL’s Signature Partnership initiative, a multifaceted program to enhance the quality of life and economic opportunity for residents of West Louisville.

Jefferson Community and Technical College, Simmons College and the University of Louisville make up the remaining three partners of the four-college partnership known as the College Connection Initiative. The Signature Partnership Access Center is the first program to come out of the initiative, which plans to grown into a consortium.

Adult learners who want to further their education can contact the center at 502-436-3245 or learn more at www.louisville.edu/speac.

Spalding Named Nation’s First Compassionate University

The Compassionate Action Network reports the following, “Spalding University, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is the first university in the world to be designated a “Compassionate University” by the International Institute for Compassionate Cities. The decision by the Spalding leadership to meet the requirements of the Institute was made as the Louisville Metro Council voted to make Louisville a Compassionate City.

Spalding is one of the most historic institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, combining a sincere dedication to comprehensive, modern education with a genuine respect for its rich academic heritage. Spalding evolved from the Nazareth Academy, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in 1814 near Bardstown, Kentucky.

Refining the Campaign

The decision to affirm the Charter for Compassion and to develop a plan for implementing a culture of compassion at Spalding follows months of consideration and discussions with Spalding President Tori Murden McClure. By confirming and certifying Spalding, the Institute is able to have a respected institution “try on” the mantle of a Compassionate University and add essential experience to the process of refining the institute’s expectations, processes, and requirements for the International Campaign for Compassionate Universities and Colleges.

A History of Compassion

Spalding’s history is a study in compassion. For example, with a commitment to healing that went beyond political affiliation, faculty and staff members of the school served as nursing sisters for both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War.President McClure continues this tradition and reaching beyond the confines of Spalding to becoming a valuable resource for the International Institute for Compassionate Cities.”

Poet Randall Horton will join the faculty of the Spalding University brief-residency Master of Fine Arts in Writing Program as a guest during the program’s Fall 2011 residency, November 11-20. During the ten-day residency, he will co-lead a poetry workshop for MFA students, participate on a panel on the topic of ekphrastic poetry with other faculty members, and give a 10-minute reading during a session of faculty readings. The faculty reading session is open to the public; time, date and location will be announced in October and posted on the Spalding MFA website, /mfa.

As a guest faculty member, Mr. Horton will also deliver a lecture titled “Cultural Memory and The Black Radical Tradition,” exploring a poetics that operates from a position of blackness or the black radical tradition. Using Derrida’s critique of différance and difference and his concept of trace, this lecture will demonstrate how language can resist the dominant narrative of life and literature through the play of language. In the course of this exploration, Mr. Horton will explicate the solo improvisations of Bobby Timmons and Lee Morgan of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in the song Monin. The lecture is open to enrolled Spalding MFA students.

Randall Horton has an MFA in Poetry from Chicago State University and a Ph.D. in creative writing from SUNY Albany. He is assistant professor of English at the University of New Haven.  He is the author of two collections of poems: The Definition of Place and The Lingua Franca of Ninth Street, both from Main Street Rag. He is the recipient of the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award, the Bea Gonzalez Poetry Award, and most recently a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in Literature.  His creative and critical work has appeared in Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, and The Packingtown Review. He is a Cave Canem Fellow, a member of the Affrilachian Poets, and a member of The Symphony: The House that Etheridge Built.

Spalding University’s four-semester, brief-residency Master of Fine Arts in Writing Program combines superb instruction with unparalleled flexibility and offers studies in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, writing for children and young adults, screenwriting, and playwriting. At the beginning of each semester, students and faculty study together at a 10-day residency in Louisville or abroad, after which students return home to work with their expert mentors in guided independent study that provides an intense, individually tailored approach and one-on-one instruction.

Spalding University was established in 1814 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The MFA Program is a member of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP). The MFA program began in 2001 and has 363 alumni and 155 students.
