Spalding University, Bellarmine University and the University of Louisville are hosting the third annual community conversation “Dialogue on Diversity” October 24 and 25. The two-part event begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Spalding University’s Auditorium (824 S. Fourth St.) with a community conversation led by Dr. Kathy Obear, founding faculty member of the Social Justice Training Institute, and Tim Wise, writer and educator. Dr. Obear will speak to how we can have meaningful conversations about diversity, learning from individual behaviors, fears, biases, stereotypes, memories of past traumas and current life experiences. Tim Wise will progress the conversation from an interpersonal focus to a systemic focus on how our individual decisions impact systems through the creation of organizational policy, practice and culture.

“We are elated to have the esteemed Dr. Kathy Obear and the thought-provoking Tim Wise on Spalding’s campus to discuss how to create inclusive, socially just environments. It is especially meaningful to our Spalding community as we move deeper into our designation as the first-certified compassionate university,” says Ron Jackson, director of student leadership and development. “Excitement is building on how Obear and Wise will broaden our lens on inclusion and equity to develop behaviors we each can use in our daily lives. The opportunity to explore the relationship between individual actions and systemic oppression will also be enriching.”

On Friday, Oct. 25, the conversation will continue, with Tim Wise as the keynote speaker, at the “Dialogue on Diversity” conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The conference will promote thoughtful and instructive discussion about the relevance and role of diversity in the fields of business, education, media, health, politics and religion.
