Senior Earns Spot as Spalding’s First DIII Cross Country National Qualifier

Senior Abram Deng placed seventh out of 256 athletes on Nov. 10 in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Cross Country Championship men’s 8K race hosted by Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. Deng averaged 5:06 per mile, with a qualifying time of 25:21.64. With Spalding being recently granted full NCAA Division III status, Deng is Spalding’s first athlete to qualify for the NCAA National Cross Country Championship, which will be held Nov. 17 at LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“I am proud of Abram and what he has accomplished this season,” says Kevin Alessandro, head cross country coach. “His four years of hard work and dedication have culminated with him serving as our school’s first NCAA DIII national qualifier. What he has done for the athletic program at Spalding will lay the foundation for a tradition of Golden Eagle harrier success.”
