Spalding University will host the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) men’s and women’s basketball tournaments this week, Feb. 27-Mar. 1, at the Derek Smith gymnasium (824 S. Fourth St.). As top performers during regular season conference play, the Spalding University men’s (18-7, 16-2) and women’s (14-10, 14-4) basketball teams earned the right to host the SLIAC post-season tournament games. Spalding’s men’s team won the regular season outright, while the women’s team finished second behind Iowa Wesleyan. (As a provisional D-III member, Iowa Wesleyan is ineligible for post-season play.) The teams that emerge victorious will advance to their respective NCAA Division III national tournament.
“We’re excited to host the SLIAC tournament and welcome the visiting teams to our newly renovated facility,” says Roger Burkman, Spalding athletic director. “Head coaches Charlie Just and Kevin Gray have done a fantastic job preparing our teams for tournament play. Our student-athletes are focused and eager to advance to the NCAA D-III national tournament.”
