Spalding University offers several dining options for students living on campus as well as those students commuting to campus in the evening and on the weekend.
The Spalding Dining Commons
Located on the second floor of the Kosair Shriner’s Building at 812 South 2nd St., the ‘Caf’ is open for lunch Monday through Friday (11:00 – 2:00pm) and features a hot meal, soup and salad bar and items from the grill including hamburgers, veggie burgers, chicken and cheese quesadillas and seasoned fries. You can also have a restaurant style experience and order off the Kosair menu with service from a member of their waitstaff. Dine inside or outside on the patio, meet with a study group or student organization over a meal in one of the private rooms and enjoy the delicious, homestyle cooking you’ve come to love. This location takes the Spalding Meal Plan, Cash and Credit Cards. The Spalding Dining Commons is closed during University-wide closures including Winter Break and observed holidays, as well as the two weeks before the start of Session 1.
The Pelican’s Pod
‘The Pod’ as students know it, is a casual hangout located on the 1st floor of the Egan Leadership Center. Serving ‘pizza by the slice’ as well as made to order pizzas, salads and subs, The Pod is a popular place for students to dine and relax between or after classes. The Pod is open for breakfast from 7:30 a.m. –9:00 a.m., for lunch from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and for dinner from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m, Monday – Friday. A brunch menu is served Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Dine in or take your food to go. The Pod is closed on Sundays, for all University-wide closures including Winter Break and observed holidays.
UNIVERSITY MEAL PLAN
Participation in the University Meal Plan is mandatory for students residing on campus. Students residing on campus must choose one of the available options for each semester of their enrollment. Students who do not choose a meal plan will be automatically placed in the STANDARD PLAN and charged accordingly. Students enroll in the meal plan of their choice when applying for housing.
All meal plans are charged by the semester and once determined CANNOT BE CHANGED. Spalding Dining Commons balances are NON REFUNDABLE and roll over into other semesters. Balances zero out at the end of Session 7.
FULL PLAN = 16-17 meals per week in the Spalding Dining Commons + $440 starting balance in Dining Dollars/Flex plan affording approximately three to four $7 meals per week at local restaurants for a total cost of $2400.
The Full Plan is the best meal for students who plan to eat virtually EVERY MEAL using the Spalding Dining plan. This plan includes up to three meals per day, five days per week in the Spalding Dining Commons, Saturday brunch in the Dining Commons, and the average of two meals per day using the Dining Dollars/Flex plan on the weekend. Balances from the Spalding Dining Commons MAY NOT be moved into the Dining Dollars/Flex accounts, but students may add to their Dining Dollar accounts as much as they choose beyond the set beginning amount.
STANDARD PLAN = 8-9 meals per week in the Spalding Dining Commons + $230 starting balance in Dining Dollars/Flex plan affording approximately one to two $7 meals per week at local restaurants for a total cost of $1400.
The Standard Plan is the best meal plan for students who plan to eat most of their meals using the Spalding Dining plan but do not plan to eat three full meals a day or plan on leaving frequently on weekends. Because the Spalding Dining Commons can deliver basic food service to students at a better rate than for-profit restaurants the Standard Plan relies heavily on campus based dining with only a minimal starting amount in the Dining Dollars/Flex account. Balances from the Spalding Dining Commons MAY NOT be moved into the Dining Dollars/Flex accounts, but students may add to their Dining Dollar accounts as much as they choose beyond the set beginning amount.
FLEX PLAN = 6-7 meals per week in the Spalding Dining Commons + $300 starting balance in Dining Dollars/Flex plan affording approximately two to three $7 meals per week at local restaurants for a total cost of $1200.
The Flex Plan is designed to offer students the most options at the lowest price while assuring basic daily nutrition and choice. The Flex Plan combines up to five meals in the Spalding Dining Commons per week with an equal starting balance of Dining Dollars/Flex spending to allow students to take advantage of the options that most work with their schedule/preferences. Students on this plan must take much more personal responsibility to budget, plan and prepare meals on their own. Balances from the Spalding Dining Commons MAY NOT be moved into the Dining Dollars /Flex accounts, but students may add to their Dining Dollars/Flex accounts as much as they choose beyond the set beginning amount.
On-campus and commuter students also have access to Spalding’s Dining Dollars/Flex program that takes advantage of the thriving urban environment in which Spalding is located. Students may use their Dining Dollars at several restaurants downtown or nearby. Some venues will even deliver pizzas and sub sandwiches directly to the residence hall (sometimes as late as 4:00 a.m.). Students can use Dining Dollars at any of the participating restaurants and have a variety of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week and on the weekend.
