List of Endowed Scholarships

Spalding’s Endowed Scholarship Program (ESP) offers annual, institutional scholarship opportunities for all students of all programs offered by the university. Current and prospective students can make application to Spalding’s Endowed Scholarship Program (ESP) on an annual basis, January thru mid-March.

 

Altrusa Club of Louisville Scholarship

Established in 1998 by the Altrusa International Club of Louisville, Inc. in honor of Anna Settle, the Altrusa International Club of Louisville/Anna Settle Scholarship is awarded annually to a non-traditional-aged college woman preparing to enter or reenter the workforce.

ASOT/TARC Scholarship Fund

Established in 2007, the ASOT/TARC Scholarship Fund is awarded to graduate occupational therapy students who have completed at least 14 hours in the professional program of study. Recipients must be enrolled full-time, have a minimum GPA of 3.25, and demonstrate financial need.

Sister Clara Francis Bamberger Scholarship in Education Fund Scholarship

Established in 1990 by Beulah Lee Fontaine ‘44, the Sister Clara Francis Bamberger ‘38 Scholarship is awarded annually to students majoring in education.

Sister Mary Catherine and Sister Mary Christopher Baseheart Scholarship

Established in 1983 by Sisters Mary Catherine ‘31 and Mary Christopher Baseheart ‘43 in memory of their parents, Bertha and Christopher Baseheart, the Sister Mary Catherine and Sister Mary Christopher Baseheart Scholarship is awarded annually to a Nursing major with preference given to SCN students.

Jerry Beamer Weekend College Scholarship

Established in 1985 by Spalding University weekend college graduates, the Jerry Beamer weekend college scholarship is awarded annually to an Adult Accelerated Program student in memory of Jerry Beamer.

Bellsouth Minority Scholarship Endowment Fund

Established in 1998 the Bellsouth Minority Scholarship is awarded to full time incoming freshmen minority students who demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Candidates must also have an 18 or higher composite ACT or 860 or higher SAT score. This scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains at least a 2.8 GPA.

Richard & Eileen Bloechl Scholarship

Established in 1999, the Richard & Eileen Bloechl Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Marie R. Bohan Scholarship

Established in 1987 by Sister Kathleen Mary Bohan for her mother Marie R. Bohan, the Marie R. Bohan Scholarship is awarded annually to a Nursing major who meets admissions criteria.

Oscar and Adeline Braun Scholarship

Established in 1972 by Adeline Braun ‘50, the Oscar and Adeline Braun Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in Nursing or a healthcare-related field. Students must show evidence of or potential for successful academic achievement, give evidence of sound character, and possess desirable personal qualities.

Ann Gordon Brigham Scholarship

Established in 1988 by Gordon Brigham for his mother, Ann, the Ann Gordon Brigham scholarship fund is awarded annually to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in social work.

Sr. Mary Ransom Burke Scholarship

Established in 2007 by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in memory of Sr. Mary Ransom Burke ’36, this scholarship is awarded to any undergraduate student with financial need. Special consideration will be given to students of minority ethnic backgrounds.

Milton and Margie Casil and Charles E. Pousardien Scholarship

Established in 1987 by Mary Hilger ‘44, the Casil/Pousardien Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in any area of study. The student must be or have a family member that is a member of a Labor or Trade Union.

James Chaney/Medgar Evers Scholarships

Established in 1975 by The Abbey of Gethsemani in honor of James Chaney and Medgar Evers, the James Chaney/Medgar Evers Scholarships are awarded to students of African-American descent.

Cralle Scholars

Established in 2000 through a grant from the Cralle Foundation, the Cralle Scholars Scholarship is awarded annually to a female student who is at least 27 years old and demonstrates need.

Dr. Nora Dean Scholarship

Established in 1942 by Dr. Nora D. Dean ‘41, the Dr. Nora D. Dean Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Dominican Community of St. Louis Bertrand Scholarship

Established by the Literary Society of St. Louis Bertrand in 1979, the Dominican Community of St. Louis Bertrand Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and has made diligent efforts to obtain financial assistance from both governmental and private agencies but who despite these efforts will not receive financial assistance sufficient to cover his or her unmet financial needs. St Louis Bertrand shall have the right to nominate a student whose family is one of its parishioners or benefactors for consideration as a possible recipient

IFCA Ruth Donnelly Memorial Scholarship

Established by the Kentucky Chapter of the International Federation of Communication Associations (IFCA) in 1986, in memory of Ruth Donnelly ‘43, the Ruth Donnelly Memorial Scholarship is awarded to teachers from Kentucky Catholic schools to aid in the continuation of their education at Spalding University.

Ellen Thomas Dunbar Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1999 in honor of Ms. Dunbar ‘77, the Ellen Thomas Dunbar Memorial Scholarship shall first be awarded annually to a Whitney Young scholar. If no Whitney Scholars apply, the scholarship will be awarded to a Spalding student in good standing.

Eugene and Eileen Egan Scholarship

Established in 1981, the Eugene and Eileen Egan Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Medgar Evers/James Chaney Scholarships

Established in 1975 by the Abbey of Gethsemani in honor of Medgar Evers and James Chaney, the Evers/Chaney Scholarships are awarded to students of African-American descent.

Sister Joseph Beatrice Eyl Scholarship

Established in 1987 by friends of Sister Joseph Beatrice Eyl, the Sister Joseph Beatrice Eyl Scholarship is awarded annually to a nursing student.

Sam and Esther Fishman Nursing Scholarship

Established in 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. Fishman, the Sam and Esther Fishman Nursing Scholarship is awarded annually to a Nursing major.

Sister Mary Ignatius Fox Scholarship

The Sister Mary Ignatius Fox Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Viola Skees French Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2001 in memory of Ms. Viola Skees French, the Viola Skees French Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming freshman majoring in environmental studies or nursing and who will be taking a full-time course load. In the absence of qualified students in these majors, another major will be considered.

Carlton E. Froess Scholarship

Established in 1986 by Carolyn Froess Keisling ‘64, the Carlton E. Froess Scholarship is awarded annually to graduates of Mercy Academy. In the event that no applicants meet this criterion, the scholarship may be awarded to non-Mercy graduates.

Doris B. Galloway Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2009, the Doris Buffet Galloway ‘50 Scholarship was created through Doris B. Galloway’s bequest to the university. Her desire was to extend an opportunity to academically promising, financially needy students to pursue their educational aspirations at Spalding University. Awardees must be undergraduates who demonstrate need and have a 3.0 GPA.

Alma Lee Gaynor-Haragan Family Scholarship

Established in 1990 by Robert Haragan in honor of his wife, Alma ‘47, the Alma Lee Gaynor-Haragan Scholarship is awarded annually to a non-traditional student with need, preferably a liberal studies major.

Sister Laurita Gibson Scholarship

Established in 1994 by Martha Murray Colleran ‘49 in memory of Sister Laurita Gibson ‘32, the Sister Laurita Gibson Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to a minority student who meets the admissions criteria and who demonstrates a need for some level of financial assistance.

Catherine Goodfriend Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1985 by Mary Louise Davitt in memory of her mother, Catherine Goodfriend, who was grateful for her own education and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The Catherine Goodfriend Scholarship is awarded annually to a student that demonstrates financial need.

Larry Hamfeldt Scholars

The Larry Hamfeldt Scholars Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in Spalding’s Kosair Charities College of Health and Natural Sciences Pre-med program and who is a graduate of Jefferson County Public Schools and a U.S. citizen. Special consideration is given to students with an interest in Pediatric or Cardiology residency programs.

Nora Duffy Hancock Scholarship

Established in 1958 through a trust fund created by Nora Duffy Hancock, the Nora Duffy Hancock Scholarship is awarded annually to a female from Clark County, Indiana.

Wood & Marie Hannah Foundation Scholarship

Established in 1998 by a grant from the Wood & Marie C. Hannah Foundation, the Wood and Marie Hanna Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Judy Genovese Hess Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2008 by the Horseshoe Foundation Floyd County in honor of Judy Genovese Hess ‘65, this scholarship is awarded to applicants from Floyd County, Indiana who demonstrates financial need, has completed some college, and is not restricted to any program. The scholarship is renewable if the student maintains academic standards as established by the Academic Dean of their respective program.

Henry V. Heuser, Jr. Endowed Scholarship in Nursing

Established in 2008 by Henry V. Heuser, Jr., this scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate nursing majors who demonstrate financial need.

Mary Louise Rueff Hubbuch Scholarship

Established in 1989 by Cornelius E. Hubbuch in honor of his wife, the Mary Louise Rueff Hubbuch Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in 2009, applicants can be either an undergraduate or a graduate majoring in Nursing/Allied Health and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to, but not limited to, a student who is also a Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s team member. This scholarship is renewable.

J. E. and Betty  Jinks Scholarship

Established in 1995, the J.E. and  Betty Jinks Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding Social Work student in good standing.

Johnson Research Scholarship Fund

Established in 2000 by Knowlton and Jillian Johnson, this scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in Social Work pursuing research as it applies to social issues for policy-making that benefits or furthers human well-being. If no suitable recipient can be identified in any single year, the funds that would have been awarded as a scholarship may be awarded at the end of that academic year to one or more students in recognition of an outstanding culminating policy research project conducted by an MSW candidate (preference, or another major pursuing policy research) during his or her final year of study. This award will be made on a competitive basis.

William L. Kean Scholarship

Established in 2000 by Charlie W. Johnson in honor of Coach William L. Kean, the William L. Kean Scholarship is awarded annually to an African-American student who maintains at least a 2.5 GPA, resides in Louisville, and demonstrates financial need. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or church official is required.

Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly Scholarship Fund

Established in 2007 the Archdiocese of Louisville, the Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly Scholarship is awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate full-time students in good standing and has demonstrated financial need. This scholarship is renewable.

Koo Social Work Scholarship

Established in 2009 by Benjamin Koo, in honor of Gretchen Koo and himself, the Koo Social Work Scholarship is awarded annually to either an undergraduate or graduate Social Work student who demonstrates financial need.

Gretchen Koo Scholarship

Established in 1977 by Benjamin Koo in memory of his wife, the Gretchen Koo Scholarship is awarded annually to a student majoring in Natural Science or Liberal Studies.

Chon Buk Sanup University (Korea) Scholarship

The Chon Buk Sanup University Scholarship was established in 1991 in gratitude to Sr. Agnes Geraldine McGann ’25. It is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Maker’s Mark Scholarship

Established through a 2001 grant, the Maker’s Mark Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who demonstrates financial need and who is taking a full-time course load. The recipient must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a 20+ on the ACT or 930+ on the SAT.

Elizabeth Isaac Marcil Scholarship

Established in 1982 by Kathryn M. Mershon in honor of her mother, Elizabeth Isaac Marcil, the Elizabeth Isaac Marcil Scholarship is awarded annually to a student(s) majoring in Nursing with a 2.5 grade point average and financial need.

The Master of Fine Arts and Writing Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in 2008, the MFAW Alumni Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a student that is enrolled full-time in the MFAW program and demonstrates need.

Patricia Whyte Masters Scholarship

Established in 1991 by Richard Masters and Ellen Thomas Dunbar in memory of Ms. Masters ‘69, the Patricia Whyte Masters Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the School of Education. Students must exhibit academic strength and demonstrate some need for financial assistance.

McClure Family Scholarship

Established by the Tori ‘05 and Mac McClure the McClure Family Scholarship is awarded annually to either an undergraduate or graduate who demonstrates financial need and is enrolled full-time. Recipients are eligible to receive the award for more than one year, provided they make ‘satisfactory’ progress.

Dr. Margaret A. McCullough Scholarship Fund

In 2007, Dr. Margaret A. McCullough’s family established this scholarship in her memory. Dr. McCullough was a longtime professor and dean of Spalding’s School of Business and Communication. Recipients can be either graduate, undergraduate, or AAP enrolled full-time to any degree granting program of study. Student must demonstrate financial need and can receive the award for more than one year, provided they make “satisfactory academic progress.”

Memorial Scholarships

Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to a Spalding student(s) in good standing.

Lillian C. Milanof Scholarship

Established in 1998 by Lillian C. Milanof, the Lillian C. Milanof Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student in social work “whose interests reflect a desire to work with a diversity of family forms and who plans to pursue a career in social work.”

Sister Frances Mills Scholarship

Established in 1987 by Sister Alice Regina Mills ‘32 in honor of Sister Frances ‘50, the Sister Frances Mills Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who shows financial need.

Sister Margaret Naber Scholarship

Established in 1957 by Sr. Naber ‘38, the Sr. Margaret C. Naber Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Mary Niescier Scholarship

Established in 2005 through Mary Niescier’s ’44 bequest to the university, the Mary Niescier Scholarship is awarded to an either undergraduate or graduate Education Major doing their student teaching. Recipient must be registered full-time, have a minimum GPA of 2.75, and demonstrate need.

Norton Healthcare Foundation Leadership in Nursing Scholarship

Established by a 1999 grant, the Norton Healthcare Foundation Leadership in Nursing Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Susan D. O’Bryan Scholarship

Established in 1944 by her sons in memory of their mother, the Susan D. O’Bryan Scholarship can be awarded to any deserving student. Relatives of the Durbin or O’Bryan family or a member of St. Theresa Church in Rhodelia can nominate a candidate.

Paul Ogle Foundation Scholarship

Established through a grant in 2003, the Paul Ogle Foundation Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate student(s) from Indiana with demonstrated need. Special consideration is given to first generation college students.

Board of Overseers Leadership in Nursing SF Scholarship

Established in 1998 by the Spalding University Board of Overseers, the Board of Overseers Leadership in Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a Nursing major.

Pathways to Success Scholarship

The Pathways to Success Scholarship was established in 2007 and is awarded to students in financial need.

Dr. Marjorie M. Perrin Endowed Scholarship in Nursing

Named for a very respected and valued member of the Spalding community for years, this scholarship is awarded to either an undergraduate or graduate nursing student with a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated need. With appropriate progress and a maintained 3.0 GPA, this scholarship is renewable.

Dorothy Painter Prentice Needful Student Aid Fund

Established in 1984 by a bequest from Ms. Prentice ‘25, the Dorothy Painter Prentice Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who shows financial need.

J. Terry Price Scholarship Fund

Established in 2008 by Terry Price ‘06, the J. Terry Price Scholarship is awarded to a graduate MFA Student in preferably the genre of fiction and demonstrates need. This scholarship is renewable.

Diana M. Raab MFA Scholarship

Established in 2005 by Ms. Raab ‘03, the Diana M. Raab MFA Scholarship is awarded to an MFA student with an outstanding potential for success in the Creative Writing Program, as demonstrated by the student’s personal statement and writing sample. Final selection will be made by the MFA Program Director.

Sister Agnes Lucile Raley and Sister Marita Reide Scholarship

Established in 1986 by the Raley Clinic in honor of Sister Raley and Sister Reide, the Sister Agnes Lucile Raley and Sister Marita Reide Scholarship is awarded annually to a psychology major as determined by the University’s Scholarship Committee.

Joseph M. and Elizabeth V. Reilly Scholarship

Established in 1994 by William and Shirley Merke in memory of her parents, Joseph M. and Elizabeth V. Reilly, the scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding nursing student in good standing.

John and Patricia Rooney Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2008 by then Spalding president Jo Ann Rooney for her parents, the John and Patricia Rooney Scholarship is awarded to either an undergraduate or graduate student whose major is education or natural science, with preference given to adult students over the age of 23.The student must also show financial need and can be renewed if a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

SCN Scholarship Fund

Established in 1973, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Scholarship is awarded annually to an indigent student. Recipients are chosen by the University’s Scholarship Committee.

Smith/Smith Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2009 by the Smith family, the Smith/Smith Endowed Scholarship honors Sylvia ’39 and Herbert Smith who sacrificed much in order to give their children the advantage of a college education. It is awarded to Creative Writing undergraduate or graduate majors who demonstrate need. Preference shall be given to, but not limited to, residents of Kentucky.

Spalding Family Scholarships

Established in 1967 by Hughes Spalding as a living memorial to Mother Catherine Spalding, the Spalding Family Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who shows financial need.

Spalding Society Scholarship

Established in 1997, the Spalding Society Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing.

Eileen Spinelli Writing for Children Scholarship

Established in 2008 by Joan Donaldson ‘08, the Eileen Spinelli Scholarship is awarded to MFAW students who specialize in the writing for children and demonstrate need.

Ellen Sullivan Scholarships

The Ellen Sullivan Scholarship is awarded annually to a female graduate of Notre Dame High School in Tennessee. In the event that no applicants meet this criterion, the scholarship may be awarded to any deserving student.

Cornelia McHenry Thomas Scholarship Fund

Established in 2008 by former Spalding Trustee Carl Thomas in memory of his mother, the Cornelia McHenry Thomas Scholarship is awarded yearly to either an undergraduate or graduate enrolled full-time. Recipients must show financial need and can be enrolled in any degree granting program.

Margaret L. Thomas Scholarship

Established in 1987 by Ellen Thomas Dunbar ‘77 in the name of her mother, the Margaret L. Thomas Scholarship is awarded annually to any Spalding student. The recipient will be chosen by the University’s Scholarship Committee.

Hildegard Thompson Scholarship

Established in 1984 by F. R. Holzheimer in honor of her sister, the Hildegard Thompson Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student or older undergraduate student.

John D. Walker, Sr. Scholarship

Established in 1986 by Janet Walker ‘83 in memory of her husband, the John D. Walker, Sr., Scholarship is awarded to a female junior or senior nursing student who has maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA and who is a single head-of-household (widowed or divorced).

Nancy Ann Ewing Wason Scholarship

Established in 2002 by Mary Lou Byers in memory of her sister, Nancy Ann Ewing Wason ‘63, the Nancy Ann Ewing Wason Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate nursing student with a 3.0 minimum GPA, who agrees to work in Louisville or Southern Indiana for two years.

Roy Edward Webster, III Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2008 by Dr. Donald E. and Mrs. Patricia Webster Rankin in memory of Roy Edward Webster, III, a former soccer coach at Spalding University, this scholarship can be awarded to either undergraduate or graduate students with need. Particular consideration is given to students with an expressed interest in Education as a program of study, especially a student with a demonstrated interest in physical fitness or physical education.

Garnett West Nursing Scholarship Fund

Established in 2008 by Stephen West in honor of his mother, Garnett West, this scholarship can be awarded to one female nursing student (sophomore, junior or senior) with a 3.0 who demonstrates financial need. Recipient must possess values of charity, service and leadership. The West scholarship is renewable.

Thomas Spalding Williams Scholarship

Established in 1984 by a bequest from Mr. Williams in honor of his sister and cousin, the Thomas Spalding Williams Scholarship is awarded annually to a Spalding student in good standing and who has demonstrated need.

Sister Mary Canisius Wilson Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually to full-time undergraduate student in the School of Liberal Studies with demonstrated need, preferably with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Carl H. and Mary C. Osbourn Wolford ’59 Scholarship Endowment to the School of Education

Established in 2001 by Carl H. and Mary C. Osbourn Wolford ‘59, this scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student from Harrison County, Indiana who is pursuing a degree in education, and is based on both merit and need. Should no Harrison County residents qualify, residents of Clark and Floyd Counties, Indiana may be considered.

Augusta Wheeler Wood Scholarship Endowment

Established in 2000 by a bequest from the estate of Ms. Wood ’53, ‘60, the Augusta Wheeler Wood Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student who meets the admissions criteria and who demonstrates a need for some level of financial assistance. The recipient shall be chosen by the University’s Scholarship Committee.

Mary Masterson Young Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2008 by Diane Young ‘57, the Mary Masterson Young Memorial Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate full-time students who demonstrate need.
