On Feb. 22, Spalding University senior Will Barber drilled a 60 ft. buzzer beater, defeating Westminster College (Mo.) 69-66 at Derek Smith Gymnasium on Spalding’s campus. The win earned SU their second consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular-season championship.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 42-26 at the half and trailed by 18 points with 18:35 remaining. But SU slowly chipped away, eventually tying up the score at 66 with 40 seconds remaining. After a Spalding foul with 36.8 seconds left, Westminister guard Joe James turned the ball over on a shot clock violation, giving SU possession with .09 of a second remaining.
Then this happened: Barber’s game-winning shot.
Barber ended the game with a 20 point performance with 17 of those points scored in the second half.
