School of Liberal Studies Hosts Basehart Lecture

Dr. Youn Kim, associate professor of english, will explore how ideologies operating in the US influence heritage language speakers’ learning experiences and their ethnic identity construction on Nov. 9 from 11:30am-12:30pm in the ELC Lectorium. Her talk, titled “Ideologies, Korean Heritage Speakers, and Multilingual America,” is part of the annual Spalding University Basehart Lecture series. Kim will address how young 1.5- and 2nd-generation immigrants perceive their ethnic identities flexibly in relation to the larger US society, and how their fluid ethnicities allow them to envision multilingual America, where they would be speakers of both the heritage language and English.
