On March 18, Spalding University athletics hosted its 6th annual “March Madness” bracketology fundraiser at Freedom Hall. Guests had the opportunity to mingle with a celebrity panel, which included University of Louisville hall of fame coach Denny Crum and 1978 University of Kentucky NCAA champion and leading scorer, Jack “Goose” Given, and bid on silent and live auction items—a Cancun vacation package, autographed sports memorabilia, liquor-theme gift baskets and more. This is the premiere fundraiser for Spalding athletics, and it has garnered nearly a half-million dollars over the past six years. All proceeds go to support the university’s 14 men’s and women’s athletic programs.
“The fact that this event has grown each year tells us we have developed a unique occasion for folks to rub elbows with local sports celebrities while enjoying the excitement surrounding the NCAA tournament,” says Athletic Director Roger Burkman. “It provides a fun environment in which to spread awareness about all we have going on at Spalding University.”
This year’s expert panel also included Coach Crum’s long-time assistant and fan favorite Jerry Jones, and local legend Darrell Griffith, who led the Louisville Cardinals to the 1980 NCAA title prior to launching his 11-year NBA career. The featured sports personalities and provided fans the opportunity to seek photographs, autographs, and anecdotes for their personal collections.
More than 1,000 people attended this year’s event. Next year’s bracketology fundraiser will also take place at Freedom Hall. To reserve tables in advance, please contact Lisa Bash DeFrees in the Spalding University athletics office at 502-873-4201.
