Staff Spotlight Saturday is a Q&A series highlighting individual staff members from various academic programs at Spalding University. This week’s featured member is Andrea Bolden, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Title IX Coordinator.
What does your role at Spalding entail?
As the Chief Diversity Officer and Title IX Coordinator, my role is grounded in compassion and a commitment to fostering an environment where every Golden Eagle can thrive. I lead initiatives that ensure equitable educational opportunities, providing resources and support for all students, staff, and faculty. I am deeply committed to ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard, and valued, advocating for inclusivity, fairness, and Title IX compliance at every level of our community.
Why did you decide to work at Spalding? What do you like about Spalding in particular?
I was drawn to Spalding University because its mission aligns closely with my values as both a scholar and a leader. Spalding’s rich legacy, including being the first institution in the 1950s to admit Black students in Kentucky, speaks to its longstanding commitment to equity and inclusion. I also deeply appreciate the university’s innovative and passionate faculty, who inspire students (myself included, as an EdD student) to excel both inside and outside the classroom. The vibrant community and the opportunity to contribute to Spalding’s tradition of excellence were key factors in my decision to join.
How do you ensure students feel supported through your role?
I strive to create an environment where students always feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether through the work of the Chief Diversity Officer or Title IX coordination, my focus is on providing clear support and advocacy. I work closely with students to address their needs, ensuring they receive the resources and guidance necessary to succeed. It’s about empowering them and creating a space where they know their voices matter and their experiences are validated.
How do you hope to impact the Spalding community through your role?
My goal is to lead with compassion and integrity, adding meaningful value to the Spalding community. I hope to serve as a transformative leader-one who fosters a culture of gratitude, inclusivity, and innovation. Every day, I aim to create a space where people feel supported in their journey, and I look forward to helping propel the university’s mission forward by encouraging a spirit of collaboration and care.
What’s an interesting thing you keep in your office?
One of the most interesting items in my office, aside from my collection of cool books, is a framed letterman jacket from my time at Western Kentucky University, my alma mater. This was from when I had the honor of being part of the Homecoming Court in 2013—a cherished memory that reminds me of the importance of community, leadership, and the power of staying connected to the roots that shaped my journey.
