Dr. Marjorie Perrin was a respected and valued member of the Spalding University community from 1992 – 1997. As Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences, she led a department that trained health care professionals who continue to serve the greater Louisville community and communities across the nation. She established a certificate program in parish nursing that became a model for other institutions. Following her tenure at Spalding, she continued to serve the School of Nursing as a member of its Advisory Board and its 75th Anniversary Celebration Planning Committee. She was active in the life of Spalding and of the wider nursing community until her death in 2011.
In recognition of the impact Dr. Perrin had on Spalding University, its School of Nursing, and on generations of nursing professionals throughout her career, Spalding University has established the Dr. Marjorie M. Perrin Endowed Scholarship in Nursing to benefit graduate and undergraduate students.
Prior to her years at Spalding, Dr. Perrin had served 26 years on the faculty of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Ala. She moved to Louisville to become director of education for Humana Inc., where she was in charge of the development of the Humana Health Institutes, now Galen College of Nursing, in Louisville, Ky., Tampa, Fla., and San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Perrin was known and loved for her contributions to the Louisville community in general, and, the nursing and Presbyterian communities, in particular. The National Health Ministries of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) awarded its first Elise Woodward Stutzer Award to her. She was a role model for nursing educators in each of the states in which she practiced her profession.
Second Presbyterian Church in Louisville, in appreciation of Dr. Perrin, contributed initial funding to support the establishment of the Dr. Marjorie M. Perrin Endowed Scholarship in Nursing at Spalding University.
