Staff Spotlight Saturday is a new Q&A series highlighting individual staff members from various academic programs at Spalding University. This week’s featured member is Chelsey Blecha, Nursing Pathway Coordinator for Spalding’s School of Nursing.
What does your role at Spalding entail?
In my role, I support students from their initial inquiry through enrollment. I assist with navigating admissions, program selection, and developing individualized pathways for academic success. My work focuses on fostering student success, coordinating recruitment initiatives, and building connections with community colleges and healthcare organizations to expand opportunities within our nursing programs.
Why did you decide to work at Spalding? What do you like about Spalding in particular?
I was drawn to Spalding because of its commitment to community-focused education and its supportive, close-knit environment. At Spalding, I have the opportunity to work directly with students, helping them carve out meaningful careers in healthcare, which is incredibly fulfilling. The campus culture is warm and inclusive, which makes it a wonderful place to work.
What advice would you give to students joining the nursing program in terms of adapting and succeeding?
Nursing school requires dedication, so it’s important to develop a solid study routine, seek support from peers and faculty, and keep a positive outlook. Success often comes from managing time effectively, staying engaged, and using all available resources. Be open to learning from every experience, even the challenges!
How do you ensure students feel supported throughout their transition into the nursing program?
By building strong, trusting relationships, I aim to create a seamless transition and foster a welcoming, supportive environment from day one. I work closely with each student to create personalized plans for success, ensuring they feel prepared and supported as they enter the program. Through regular check-ins, we address any concerns early on, adapt to unique needs, and connect students with key resources.
How does the nursing program ensure students are ready for real-world healthcare settings, especially in high-pressure environments like hospitals?
Our program integrates rigorous coursework with immersive clinical experiences, equipping students for diverse and fast-paced healthcare settings. Our interactive learning strategies and state-of-the-art simulation labs offer hands-on, real-world experiences that are pivotal to developing critical thinking and clinical skills. Students will gain confidence and develop the essential skills needed to handle complex patient care. This integrated approach ensures our graduates are well-prepared to make an impact in their field from day one.
What are some key resources or support systems you recommend for students entering nursing or healthcare fields?
I recommend students leverage peer study groups, faculty office hours, and the university’s tutoring resources. For personal growth, involvement in nursing associations or mentorship programs can be transformative. These resources ensure students have both academic and professional support as they advance. Never be afraid to ask for help!
What’s an interesting thing you keep in your office?
I keep a small collection of thank-you notes from students I’ve helped along their journeys. They serve as a reminder of the impact of our work and motivate me to continue supporting each student in achieving their goals.
