Dr. Joanne Mathison Berryman, a distinguished leader in healthcare and academia, was appointed as the Interim President of Spalding University on July 1, 2024. She succeeds Victoria “Tori” Murden McClure, who retired after 25 years of dedicated service.

Dr. Berryman’s career began in the medical field, where she made a significant impact as a Registered Nurse at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Through her consistent incorporation of a collaborative approach to problem solving, by 1990, Berryman’s career expanded to clinical development at Louisville Baptist Hospital. She was later promoted to President and CEO of Frazier Rehab Institute and Vice President of Jewish Hospital HealthCare Service (JHHS).

Dr. Berryman’s distinguished career includes pivotal roles in healthcare administration. She provided leadership to the integration of JHHS and the CARITAS Hospitals which created Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare (JHSMH).  She also led groundbreaking initiatives at the Frazier Rehab Institute, including the development of Centers of Excellence in Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Neuroscience. Her leadership was instrumental in securing a $10 million grant for hand transplant research from the Department of Defense.

Transition to Academia

In 2009, Dr. Berryman transitioned to academia as the Dean of the Kosair Charities College of Health and Natural Sciences at Spalding University. Her leadership continued as she became the Provost of Spalding University in 2013. Following her retirement from these roles in 2018, she remained active in the academic community by directing the Kosair for Kids Leadership Development Institute at Spalding.

Dr. Berryman has been actively involved in various community boards, including the University of Louisville Board of Overseers, the Hosparus Health Board of Directors, and the Rotary Club of Louisville. Her contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Business First Pioneer in Health Care and Lifetime Achievement Award, and being named one of the Most Influential Health Care Business Leaders in Greater Louisville by Business First.

Dr. Berryman is relator. She is committed to deepening the relationships around her to be able to connect and influence people. She wants to understand other’s goals, feelings, hopes, and dreams. And she wants others to understand hers. She is a big believer that action is the best device for learning.

As Interim President, Dr. Berryman is committed to maintaining and enhancing the university’s mission of inclusivity and innovation. She looks forward to working closely with Spalding’s trustees, faculty, staff, and students to provide strategic direction during this transitional period and ensure a smooth onboarding process to set up our next leaders for success, so that they are prepared to take on the honor as the next president of the university.
