So what careers can you pursue with a social work degree? From clinical therapy to social justice advocacy, the possibilities are as diverse as the needs they aim to meet. Here are a few career avenues you can pursue with a social work degree:
Clinical Social Worker
A Clinical Social Worker is a licensed professional trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health and emotional disorders.
They use therapeutic techniques, often in one-on-one or group settings, to support individuals dealing with a wide range of issues, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, family challenges, substance abuse, and chronic illness.
They can work in diverse settings, including hospitals, private practices, schools, community health centers, and social service agencies, and they might collaborate with other professionals, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical staff to provide comprehensive care.
Child Protective Services Worker
A Child Protective Services (CPS) worker is a social services professional responsible for investigating reports of child abuse, neglect, or endangerment and ensuring children’s safety and well-being.
CPS workers may also connect families with resources like counseling, parenting classes, and healthcare. In cases where children are not safe at home, CPS workers may arrange for temporary foster care or assist with legal processes to protect the child’s welfare.
School Social Worker
School social workers are licensed professionals who support students’ social, emotional, and academic well-being within a school setting. School social workers collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to create safe and supportive environments, develop intervention plans, and connect families with community resources.
According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statsitics, the median annual wage for social workers was $58,380 in May 2023, with overall employment for social workers projected to grow 7% from 2023-2033.
