Career Conference

February 13th & 14th

In collaboration with Student Affairs and the Spalding Alumni Association the Career Design Center is hosting a Career Conference on Feb 13 and 14. The conference will cover a rage of topics, including intergenerational communication, artificial intelligence, managing imposter syndrome, and job interview preparation. The workshops and panel discussions will be held in the Lecture hall of the Egan Leadership Center (ELC). Students can signup using navigate or can contact me at [email protected].

Itinerary

Tuesday, February 13th

9:50 – 11:30 AM: “Communication Across the Generations” panel discussion led by Dr. Sarah Beach

In the workplace, each generation (Boomers, Gen X, Millennial and Gen Z) has strengths and weaknesses, born of their unique historical, sociocultural, political, educational and other factors. In our quickly shifting landscape, we have the unique opportunity to collaborate across four generations at one time. By opening a dialogue between and across generational lines, we can collectively prepare for the unique challenges and blessings of the upcoming decades in the workforce. This panel consists of a Boomer, a Gen X, a Millennial and a Gen Z speaking to their personal experiences with generational communication in the workplace.

11:30 AM – 2:10 PM: Flipped Career Fair — Career Connections Convention in the Library

In collaboration with Student Affairs, the Career Design Center is organizing a business casual networking opportunity. Students who plan to attend the career fair should bring a portfolio, which should include a resume, references, cover letters and personal value pitches

12:30 – 2:10 PM: “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Four Perspectives” panel discussion led by Charles Maynard

This panel looks at machine learning through the lens of an instructor, writing center director, librarian and undergrad student.

Wednesday, February 14th

9:50 – 11:30 AM: “Mastering the Job Interview” workshop by Ian Van Deventer

Topics will include:

Dressing for the interview
Anticipating & answering interview questions
Mock interview/practice
How to negotiate the salary & subsequent merit increases
Thank you letters

12:30 – 2:10 PM: “The Dance of Harmonious Balance: Managing Imposterism While Dancing Through the Balance of Life” panel led by Allison From-Tapp

What is a Flipped Career Fair?

A flipped career fair is a unique twist on the traditional career fair model. In this reverse career fair, the spotlight is on the talent of the students seeking opportunities in networking, building mentor relationships and potential employment. The students take center stage and present themselves to local and reginal professionals.

Our Flipped career fair model aims to empower students by presenting their comprehensive portfolios in a pre-interviewing model. Through sharing comprehensive portfolios including resumes, references, cover letters, and personal value pitches, students gain valuable experience articulating who they are, the value they bring, their achievements, and the strategic path they’ve designed for their future. The primary goals include connecting with potential mentors, receiving constructive feedback on their value pitches, exploring diverse career opportunities, and facilitating connections between potential employers and employees for job opportunities, internships or volunteer positions.

Employers and professionals are invited to circulate in a relaxed and conversational atmosphere, fostering meaningful exchanges between students and industry experts. This setting encourages open dialogue and networking, potentially leading to valuable connections such as mentorships or employment opportunities.
